Encounter is part of the series of Skyspaces that James Turrell has created in various parts of the world. The distinctive feature of the piece in the Botanical Garden is its elliptical shape, which, seen from the sky, simulates the shape of an eye.
Understood as a space for contemplation, introspection and reflection, the work is part of the curatorial discourse that Patrick Charpenel has developed for the Botanical Garden in Culiacán, where art is sought to become an ally that helps the visitor to generate a new look, a reflection and connection with the space in which it is found.
The landscape that accompanies the piece is an extension of the "Collection of Palmetum" where specimens of great scientific and ornamental value can be seen.

BIOGRAPHY
James Turrell's career begins in the sixties in California. From the beginning, he positioned himself as the leader of a new group of artists who worked with light and space.
James Turrell has studies in various areas of knowledge such as psychology of perception, art, mathematics and astronomy, in addition to being an air pilot.
This knowledge has enriched and directed his artistic practice.
Throughout his production, the artist has emphasized the emotional nature of the experience generated by light. His fascination with light phenomena is connected to a personal but at the same time universal quest: to understand the place of the human being in the cosmos.
His work has developed a series of works and postulates on the relationship between light, space and perception. Most of his projects are conceived as places of meditation and introspection where there are no objects or established reference points, what there is is light, only light.
HIS WORK
RODER CRATER
The Roden Crater is a 400 meter high dormant volcano, located in Flagstaff, Arizona at 1,600 feet above sea level. Considered a life project, Turrell acquired the crater in the 1970s.
The Roden Crater has a system of rooms, tunnels and viewpoints that work according to the principle of the camera obscura. The goal is to transform the space into a work of art and an observatory.
Turrell's intention with this project is to bring light from heaven to earth, connecting visitors with the movements of the planets, stars and distant galaxies.

Turrell's production is characterized by highlighting the materiality of light.
SKYSPACES
A skyspace is an observatory, a chamber with an opening in the ceiling through which visitors can observe the sky
Thanks to programmed lighting, sunrise and sunset are transformed in front of the eyes of the beholder. The tonality of the lights affects the way the sky is perceived, causing an aesthetic experience in the viewer.
In this architectural creation, light seems to acquire corporality. The viewer thinks he perceives different colors in the sky, however, it is he who builds the experience.
There are currently more than 90 skyspaces in the world, a series of works that Turrell began in the 1970s.
